The National Collegiate Athletic Association has officially awarded Van Andel Arena the 2013 Division I Men’s Ice Hockey West Regional. The two-day event will feature four teams and is the first leg in determining a national college champion.
The regional will be held on March 29-30. The University of Michigan is hosting the event for the first time here. In the previous regionals held at the arena, Western Michigan University was the host. Both schools have Division I teams that play in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, which also has Michigan State and Ferris State universities in its lineup.
But just because U-M is hosting the event doesn’t mean its team will play in it, a matter that is fairly crucial to the event’s attendance. The regionals at the arena that have drawn the largest crowds have had Michigan or MSU assigned to play in the four-team competition. When neither school participated, ticket sales were lower. The NCAA will reveal which teams will play here in March.
But tickets are available now. A two-day pass costs $60. The price rises to $65 on Jan. 1. Single-day passes will go on sale at a later date. Groups of ten or more will get a $5 discount on each two-day pass purchased.
Tickets are available at the arena, DeVos Place, www.tickmaster.com, Ticketmaster outlets and at (800) 745-3000. Group tickets can be ordered at www.vanandelarena.com/groupsales or by calling (616) 742-6185.
