Downtown development agency invites public to weigh in on park upgrades

The Grand Rapids Downtown Development Authority will host two sessions this Saturday as a way to gather ideas from the public on how to upgrade two parks in the sector and also honor the city’s war veterans.

Both parks are in the same neighborhood on the east end of Monroe Center.

Veterans Memorial Park occupies 1.6 acres at East Fulton and Sheldon Avenue, just east of the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum.

Monument Park, which contains the city’s tribute to its Civil War veterans, is a small triangular property at the intersection of Division Avenue, Fulton Street and Monroe Center.

The DDA is hosting one session from 9 a.m. until noon and a second will run from 1-2:30 p.m. Both will be held in the Grand Rapids Community College Applied Technology Center at 151 Fountain St. SE.

The DDA will present and discuss the day’s findings starting at 4 p.m. Saturday in the same location. That session is expected to last about two hours.

The DDA plans to upgrade both parks this year and wants to hear from the public before starting the projects.

Free parking will be available in the public ramp off Ransom Street.
