Teens who participate in a downtown nonprofit’s after-school program will be using new computer equipment, thanks to a corporate gift.

$20K lab

The David D. Hunting YMCA in Grand Rapids has a new computer lab worth about $20,000.

London-based International Game Technology, or IGT, will unveil its 270th worldwide After School Advantage computer lab today at the YMCA branch.

The lab is part of the YMCA’s free after-school program, TeenZone, for youth ages 11-17.

The unveiling and ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place from 4:30-5:30 p.m. at the YMCA, at 475 Lake Michigan Dr. NW.

As part of the $20,000 gift, IGT included five iPad Airs with cases, five Dell Latitude 3540 laptops, five Dell OptiPlex 7020 desktop computers, a 55-inch TV, 10 LCD monitors and a laptop cart, as well as furniture and decorations for the lab.

“We are grateful for our partnership with IGT and the improvements made in our TeenZone,” said Johnathan Pope, executive director, David D. Hunting YMCA. “With the increasing likelihood of teens engaging in risky behaviors when left alone during the after-school hours, generous support from organizations like IGT help the Y provide a safe place to surround our teens with positive peer influences and caring adults when they need them most.”

IGT labs

The Grand Rapids YMCA computer lab is the seventh After School Advantage lab IGT has opened in Michigan since 2000.

IGT also has labs in Detroit, Lansing, Benton Harbor, Jackson, Eaton Rapids and Pontiac.

“IGT’s goal is to create opportunities for future student success through the installation of a computer lab at the David D. Hunting YMCA,” said Christopher Shaban, regional VP of US Region I, IGT. “This lab will provide teens with powerful educational resources and modern technologies that will help them develop problem-solving skills and confidence for successful lives.”
