Trade week business conference coming to GVSU

Competing for business on the global stage will be the hot topic at a conference coming to Grand Rapids next week.

The Van Andel Global Trade Center (VAGTC) at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) and the U.S. Commercial Service Grand Rapids office will co-host the 36th annual Michigan World Trade Week Business Conference from 12-4 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, at GVSU’s Seidman College of Business at 50 Front Ave. SW in downtown Grand Rapids.

This year’s theme will be “The Next Normal: Growing Sales in 2022 and Beyond,” with topics on tap including the global supply chain, the European Union and top consumer trends.

People can register here to attend the conference, which will include in-person and virtual options.

Sonja Johnson, executive director of the VAGTC, said the conference will provide business leaders with resources to overcome challenges when navigating overseas markets.

“Even during this challenging period, the business community continues to find ways to compete globally,” Johnson said. “Conference speakers and resources will help attendees learn more about the sanctions and compliance regulations with overseas markets and how to deal with increased costs and other obstacles.”

Kendra Kuo, director of the U.S. Commercial Service office in Grand Rapids, said, whether attendees are new to exports or more experienced, the conference will be helpful.

“The Michigan World Trade Week Business Conference will provide participants with forward-thinking strategies on how to engage global customers as they continue to establish and refine new ways of doing business post-pandemic,” she said.

Mark Baxa, president and CEO of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals, will give the keynote address.

Michigan World Trade Week works collaboratively with other partner organizations that also hold events focusing on global topics. Partner organizations include the Economics Club of Grand Rapids and World Affairs Council of West Michigan.
