The founder of a plant nursery and product development company has launched a new subsidiary focused on “wellness lighting.”
Nunica-based Hortech founder and owner Dave MacKenzie — who established the 36-year-old company’s subsidiaries LiveRoof and LiveWall in 2006 and 2012 — has launched a new offshoot under the Hortech umbrella called Norb, according to Hortech this month.
Norb is rolling out lighting products for people building on the success of a plant light MacKenzie created in 2016, the NorbBOTANIC Nutri-Orb, an LED white light that “illuminates interiors with a specialized spectrum that also supports plant growth and health.”
MacKenzie created the Nutri-Orb after discovering LED lights did not have the right wavelengths for photosynthesis, and LED grow lights — which emit an “unnatural violet glow” — were not suitable for public-facing installations.
“Developing NorbBOTANIC to meet the challenge of lighting indoor living walls took us on a journey of discovery,” MacKenzie said. “Along the way, we learned light science and came to appreciate just how vital light is for human health and well-being.”
MacKenzie and his team took what they learned and designed “biologically tuned, human-centric lighting products” to make people feel “healthier, happier and more productive.”
The two new, people-centric products under Norb are NorbSLEEP and NorbSMILE.
NorbSLEEP is designed to provide “a soft, warm, white-color light with the wavelengths of natural evening light” to help the body produce melatonin, the hormone key to relaxation and sleep.
It is a dimmable A19 LED bulb with 9 watts, similar to a 40-watt incandescent bulb, and fits standard sockets.
NorbSMILE is a white light “designed with the sun’s ‘happy’ light spectrum” to awaken and energize.
It is available as an A19 LED bulb with 11 watts and as a tube light with 18 LED watts.
NorbSMILE is marketed as fitting for homes, offices, school and university classrooms and hallways, and lobbies and meeting rooms in office buildings and hotels.
NorbSLEEP and NorbSMILE are both available at Amazon.com.
