Family donates island land

DRUMMOND ISLAND — A conservation group has created a nature preserve on Drummond Island off the eastern Upper Peninsula, thanks to a gift.

The Little Traverse Conservancy said the land gift is from the family of Carl Forslund Jr. in memory of their parents, Carl and Anne Forslund.

The Forslund family was in the furniture business in Grand Rapids.

The preserve includes more than 56 acres, as well as 1,800 feet of shore along the St. Mary’s Channel.

The conservancy said the area is accessible to the public and called the Forslund Dix Nature Preserve.

Little Traverse Conservancy has been expanding its holdings in the eastern Upper Peninsula, especially shorelines.
