A financial services firm with a local office has promoted an employee to the role of principal.

Troy-based Rehmann said this month it appointed Tom Winkelman, a certified public accountant who joined the firm in 2010, as a principal in Rehmann’s Grand Rapids office.

Responsibilities

Winkelman will take a leadership role in the firm’s strategic succession planning services for organizations, family businesses and the CPA profession.

“We are in the middle of a massive transition as one generation begins to exit the workforce and the next generation takes on a leadership role,” Winkelman said. “The big challenge is that knowledge must be transferred and the right internal leaders and external advisors need to be identified to handle the changes.”

Winkelman will also continue to provide attest services to medium and large businesses, as well as consulting, financial statement analysis and planning primarily for manufacturing, construction and higher education clients.

Winkelman’s background

Winkelman has worked in public accounting since 2005 and joined Rehmann in 2010.

Before joining Rehmann, Winkelman worked for the Grand Rapids-based accounting firm Beene Garter as an audit and tax manager for five years.

He also previously worked in project management, client service and vendor relations for Grand Rapids-based Ideal Printing.

Winkelman earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Davenport University and an associate degree in printing technology from Ferris State University.

He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals for the city of Walker.
