A vegetarian food brand has announced it is converting to a 100-percent vegan portfolio.
MorningStar Farms, a brand of Battle Creek-based Kellogg Company, is committing to convert its entire product lineup to 100-percent plant-based offerings by 2021, according to the brand last week.
The commitment includes converting products to vegan that are currently available to 25,000 restaurants and eating establishments within K-12 schools, colleges, universities and hospitals.
All MorningStar Farms products — from its Spicy Black Bean Burger to Breakfast Sausage Patties — will be 100-percent plant-based by 2021.
About 50 percent of the brand’s portfolio has already been transitioned and that is projected to increase to about 65 percent by the end of 2019. This includes all Chick’n nuggets and patties and the Meat Lovers, Veggie Lovers, Falafel and Tex-Mex burgers.
“This is a very exciting opportunity for us,” said Mel Cash, head of global marketing, plant-based protein, Kellogg Company. “By making this change, MorningStar Farms favorites can be enjoyed by even more people at home and on the go who strive to add plant-based proteins to their plate.
“This will also help us further our commitment to a greener world by helping to reduce the water waste, land usage and carbon emissions associated with egg production.”
In conjunction with the vegan commitment, the brand also introduced the MorningStar Farms Cheezeburger, a vegan patty with 23 grams of plant-based protein, at the Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim, California last week.
