A food distributor’s 384,000-square-foot headquarters has received a LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
Gordon Food Service, which has its headquarters at 1300 Gezon Parkway in Wyoming, said this month it earned the certification.
A new HQ
In September 2011, Gordon Food Service broke ground on the building, which the company said was necessitated by an expanding workforce.
The building was completed in September 2012 and serves as the primary workplace for more than 1,200 employees.
Jim Gordon, CEO of Gordon Food Service, said the headquarters “emulates the balance between a productive and enjoyable workspace and a sustainable future.”
“Efficient design that promotes a healthy working and living environment benefits everyone: our customers, our employees and our community,” Gordon said.
Gordon Food Service achieved the LEED Silver certification for implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions aimed at achieving high performance in sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
The building features a number of energy-saving features: designated low-emissions/fuel-efficient vehicle parking spaces; outdoor plants that don’t require irrigation; low-flow plumbing fixtures; geothermal wells; use of recycled materials in construction of the building; and adjustable workstation vents.
The U.S. Green Building Council, or USGBC, developed the LEED rating system in 2000.
It is the foremost program for buildings, homes and communities that are designed, constructed, maintained and operated for improved environmental and human health performance.
More than 72,000 commercial and institutional projects are currently participating in LEED, comprising more than 13.8 billion square feet of construction space in all 50 states and 150 countries.
