A “food as medicine” company is taking its healthy meal service to the next level in a new commercial kitchen and café.

Dr. Erica Armstrong, founder and CEO of Root Functional Medicine at 746 Wealthy St. SE in Grand Rapids, said she and her team are taking their functional food-as-medicine service to the next level by opening a commercial kitchen and café at 1001 Lake Drive SE in Grand Rapids East Hills neighborhood, in the former Marie Catrib’s space that was recently vacated by Kingfisher Restaurant & Deli.

Root’s new space is scheduled to open in November, Armstrong said in a Facebook video.

The business will also retain its Wealthy Street location.

Since October 2018, the Root team of doctors and dietitians has been offering a root-cause approach to wellness, as well as advanced testing and food-as-medicine services.

In May 2020, Root turned some of its proprietary functional food plans — which it uses with clients for reducing inflammation, balancing hormones and blood sugar, and restoring gut health — into recipes and take-home meals through Root Farmacy.

Those Farmacy meals will now be prepared at the new space in a commercial kitchen that will be entirely gluten-free and also will accommodate one-on-one meetings with nutrition clients for hands-on meal preparation.

Farmacy meals are cooked by dietitian/chef Jenn Fillenworth. Root also will hire a sous chef, a line cook, and a deli utility position able to do front of house and back of house at the new location.

“What makes our meal service unique is that it is truly built on food plans that we have proven to work for our one-on-one clients, and the meals can even be combined with clinical programs. This is something that no other meal service company is doing,” Armstrong said.

The former deli space at the facility also will sell grab-and-go, food-as-medicine snacks, meals and “healthier coffee” in a café setting.
