Hopeful pet owners looking to adopt will receive a helping hand this holiday season.
The BISSELL Pet Foundation said yesterday that it will cover 100 percent of adoption costs at the Kent County Animal Shelter, beginning on Nov. 23 and continuing through the end of the year. It is the second year for the foundation’s Home for the Holidays campaign.
Adoption fees are typically $70 for dogs, $40 for kittens younger than four months old and $5 for cats older than four months old.
The fees cover the shelter’s costs over the average time the animals spend in the shelter and a full health screening.
In place of the regular adoption fee, those looking to adopt are encouraged to donate canned pet food or new blankets to the shelter.
Due in part to BISSELL Pet Foundation’s support, the Kent County Animal Shelter found homes for a record 1,028 pets last year, and 270 of those were placed during the Home for the Holidays campaign.
BISSELL Pet Foundation founder Cathy Bissell said that twice as many cats were adopted during the last Home for the Holidays campaign than in an average month.
The shelter’s adoption process remains the same during the campaign, which necessitates pre-adoption counsel, the submission of an adoption application, verification of an animal-friendly household and records of any previous pet ownership.
All pets adopted from Kent County Animal Shelter will be up to date on vaccinations, spayed or neutered and microchipped.
A $12 license fee is required to adopt a dog.
The Kent County Animal Shelter is located in Grand Rapids, at 740 Fuller Ave. NE.
Founded in 2011, the BISSELL Pet Foundation aims to reduce the number of animals in shelters and support organizations dedicated to the humane care and treatment of animals.
The foundation is supported by BISSELL Homecare, a 139-year-old maker of vacuum cleaners and floor-care products headquartered in Walker.
