Furniture maker appoints board member

A local furniture maker has appointed an executive for a Fortune 500 company to its board of directors.

Grand Rapids-based Steelcase this month appointed Catherine “Triona” C.B. Schmelter to its board of directors, according to the company.

Schmelter was appointed to a term on the 11-person board that will end at the company’s shareholders’ meeting in July 2020.

“We are pleased to welcome Triona to the Steelcase board of directors,” said Rob Pew, board chair. “Triona has an impressive background with extensive experience spanning the consumer packaged goods, food and manufacturing industries. Her insight will be invaluable during this exciting time of growth.”

Schmelter is president, meal solutions, of TreeHouse Foods, a $4.3 billion Fortune 500 manufacturer of packaged foods and beverages.

She has more than 20 years of strategic, branding, sales and marketing, R&D, innovation, food safety and finance experience. She also brings expertise in portfolio optimization, lean operating efficiencies and simplifying manufacturing and distribution operations.

Schmelter holds an M.B.A. in marketing from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.

The Steelcase board “continuously evaluates its composition” to ensure it encompasses “the experience, skills and insights needed to ensure the company delivers the best value to its shareholders,” according to Steelcase.

Steelcase was recognized at the Women’s Forum of New York’s Breakfast of Corporate Champions on Nov. 7 for women holding over 30% of its board seats.


Founded in 1912, Steelcase offers a portfolio of architecture, furniture and technology products and services via a network of over 800 dealer locations.

Its family of brands includes Steelcase, Coalesse, Designtex, PolyVision, Turnstone, Smith System, Orangebox and AMQ.

The company reported fiscal 2019 revenue of $3.4 billion.
