GE Aviation has been awarded a contract from Boeing to provide the electronic flight-management system for the new Boeing 737 MAX airliner. The system will be designed and manufactured at GE in Grand Rapids and Clearwater, Fla., with the first 737 MAX scheduled for delivery in 2017.
Boeing has orders for 1,064 of the aircraft from airlines and leasing companies worldwide.
GE Aviation’s system controls an aircraft’s flight path to an accuracy of 10 meters and the time of arrival to within 10 seconds to any point in the flight plan. The system provides the ability to fly shorter flight paths and employ idle-thrust descents, reducing fuel consumption, air pollution and community noise levels.
George Kiefer, vice president of avionics for GE Aviation, said the company’s flight-management technology “is a key part of most airlines’ plan to conduct Required Navigation Performance operations and allows them to realize significant cost savings with lower fuel consumption, while benefiting the environment with reduced emissions.”
GE said the Boeing Next-Generation 737 is the most fuel efficient and reliable single-aisle airliner today with an 8 percent per seat operating cost advantage over the nearest competitor. Equipped with new LEAP-1B engines from CFM International, a joint venture of GE and Snecma, and improvements such as the advanced technology winglet, the MAX reduces fuel burn and CO2 emissions by 13 percent, while maintaining the 8 percent operating cost advantage.
The 737 MAX is a quieter aircraft, with a “noise footprint” near the ground that is 40-percent smaller than existing single-aisle airliners, according to GE.
