The city of Grand Rapids is accepting applications for firefighter positions through Monday, Oct. 25.
Those interested in applying must be at least 18 years old, have a valid driver’s license, a high school diploma or GED, no felony convictions and at least 20/30 corrected vision or 20/100 for uncorrected.
“The Grand Rapids Fire Department values the residents and the visitors to the city of Grand Rapids and its surrounding area,” said Fire Chief John Lehman. “As such, we strive to employ a diverse group of people dedicated to ensuring their safety and assisting them in any way possible. We want to receive applications and ultimately hire people who desire to be excellent at this craft and who are interested in protecting this community.”
Grand Rapids firefighters receive a starting annual salary of $48,796 and a comprehensive benefits package, including paid sick time/vacation/holidays; medical, dental and vision; a pension plan; tuition reimbursement; a Flexible Spending Account (FSA); Employee Assistance Program (EAP); and homeownership grant opportunities in specific areas.
All new candidates’ education through the GRFD Training Academy is free, even if they already possess firefighter certifications. The four-month course includes classroom learning and hands-on environment training intended to give recruits the opportunity to experience real-world firefighting scenarios where they will save lives while keeping themselves safe.
