Art lovers from around the world now can enjoy the Grand Rapids Art Museum’s current exhibit of The Jansma Print Collection on their iPad.
GRAM recently launched the Jansma Print Collection iPad app, developed by local firm Conduit Studio and available through iTunes. The free interactive app allows mobile viewers the opportunity to enjoy the collection from afar or add to their gallery experience. The app provides information about the artists featured in the collection, their techniques and social history in one user-friendly resource. Additionally, engaging interactive elements allow users to dive deeper into the work, discovering details and highlights of the important collection.
“GRAM is fortunate to have these unique old master prints in our collection, but because of their delicate nature, we must limit the time they are on view,” said Dana Friis-Hansen, GRAM director and CEO. “Working with Conduit Studio to create an iPad app and special website, we have made our collection and our scholarship accessible for independent learning at any time and in any place — we're so excited to find that by expanding our digital media program, GRAM is growing a truly global audience.”
The Jansma Print Collection includes five centuries of masterpieces, spanning the 16th through the 20th centuries and focusing on Christian and Biblical themes. The collection includes work by Albrecht Dürer, Max Pechstein, Rembrandt van Rijn, 24 newly acquired works by Italian artist Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, and a print by Édouard Manet.
The current exhibit celebrates the recent addition of Tiepolo’s “The Flight into Egypt” series to GRAM’s collection. The series tells the story of Mary, Joseph and Jesus’ flight into Egypt as told in the Bible, Matthew 2:13-15.
“The passion the Jansma family shares for art, history and spirituality is contagious,” Friis-Hansen said. “Their gifts to the museum have resonating effects for those who have been able to see these prints firsthand.”
The Jansma Print Collection includes 57 works collected since 2005.
In its first week, the app has been downloaded in 10 countries. The Jansma Print Collection app can be downloaded at https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gram-01/id605818764?mt=8.
