Grand Rapids Magazine has crowned a new Restaurant of the Year.
This year’s Restaurant of the Year award went to Reserve in downtown Grand Rapids, at 201 Monroe Ave. NW.
The restaurant opened its doors in 2010, offering “elegant farm-to-table” fare and featuring a “notable” wine list.
Chef Zach Pisciotta said Reserve makes it a point to “source as locally as possible.”
“I really enjoy building relationships with all of the farmers and butchers throughout Michigan,” Pisciotta said.
He said menu items are made from scratch daily, which helps Reserve stand out.
Chef Lucas VerHulst said creating a menu based on seasonally available produce is paramount to Reserve’s efforts to educate diners and be good environmental stewards as well as fill their bellies.
“We are making steps every day to try to lower our carbon footprint and source as close to home as possible," VerHulst said. "It's our responsibility as experts in the field to educate people about seasons and food choices.”
The Grand Rapids Business Journal’s sister publication names a new Restaurant of the Year annually along with a list of the city’s top 10 restaurants and a Best New Restaurant winner. This year it also selected two restaurants for honorable mentions.
Sarah Tincher, managing editor of Grand Rapids Magazine, said choosing the Restaurant of the Year is a year-long process undertaken by staff as well as an outside panel of people who visit restaurants throughout the year and come together to make the final selection.
“There are quite a few factors taken into consideration when deciding on the winners — including food freshness and quality, service, atmosphere and the selection on the menu, among others — and we were all impressed by Reserve, as they excelled in every aspect and stood above the rest,” Tincher said.
“It was a tough choice for all of us, because there are so many great restaurants in Grand Rapids, but all of the winners have truly earned the recognition.”
