The Grand Rapids City Commission has welcomed the city’s new director of the Parks & Recreation Department.
David Marquardt comes to Grand Rapids from Denver, where he led the Planning, Design and Construction Division of the Denver Parks Department.
The City of Grand Rapids announced the hire this week.
Marquardt’s experience includes managing capital improvement, maintenance programs, grants management, urban park planning and community outreach.
Previously, Marquardt worked in the private sector in Madison, Wis., where he served as a principal planner for Vierbicher Associates in its urban planning, community development and engineering groups, and as a landscape architect for Ken Saiki Design.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
His previous experience “positions him well to jump in and lead implementation of parks millage investments,” said Gregory Sundstrom, city manager, City of Grand Rapids.
Marquardt said he’s pleased to join the Grand Rapids community.
“We have a lot of work ahead of us, but it's exciting work,” he said.
