Grand Rapids has a new top cop.

The city on Friday named David Rahinsky as its next police chief, effective July 7.

He currently holds the same post in Franklin, Tenn. Rahinsky joined the department as deputy chief in 2006 and has been police chief in that city since 2011.

Previously, Rahinsky held numerous law enforcement posts within the Broward County Sheriff's Department in Florida.

He replaces Kevin Belk, who officially retired from the Grand Rapids Police Department in February.

Finalists for the Grand Rapids job included East Grand Rapids' Public Safety Director Mark Herald and Michael Reaves, who holds the same position in Port Huron. Herald left the Grand Rapids department as a captain in 2002 after 18 years of service.
