A local library system is offering a new online film-streaming service to its cardholders.
The Grand Rapids Public Library, or GRPL, said last month that it was “one of the first public libraries in the nation” to offer Kanopy, a provider of streaming documentaries, indie and foreign films, classics and blockbusters.
“The Grand Rapids Public Library is known for its film collection,” said Rebecca Near, collection services coordinator, GRPL. “Kanopy enhances our collection and provides even more options for our patrons who love movies.”
Free to use with a Grand Rapids Public Library card, people can access the Kanopy collection by visiting grpl.kanopystreaming.com and either creating an account or singing up with a Facebook or Google+ account. Once logged in, the site will prompt visitors to add their library card number and password.
Each patron will be allowed to stream seven films per month.
In addition to watching the films on any Internet-ready device, Kanopy allows users to share on social media, create clips or playlists and embed them in websites or blog posts, so that content will be shareable and foster educational discussion.
“We are very excited,” said Kristen Krueger-Corrado, marketing and communications manager, GRPL. “We’re one of the first public libraries in the country to offer this service. We have a huge film community here, and we’re excited we’re able to offer such a complete service.”
