Groundbreakings are being held at three Grand Rapids parks this afternoon.

Douglas Park, at 301 Lexington Ave. NW, Mulick Park, at 1632 Sylvan Ave. SE, and Camelot Park, at 2230 Rowland Ave. SE, will receive several upgrades to modernize their amenities.

The projects will be completed by mid October.

Improvements will vary at each park, but all of the construction plans include updating inoperable, outdated and inaccessible equipment and facilities.

Douglas Park will receive $190,454 in improvements, including a new picnic area, playground improvements, fence replacement, improved walking paths and new bench seating, lighting and bike racks.

Mulick Park will receive $429,834 in improvements, including a new picnic shelter, ball field upgrades, improved walkways and lighting, new tot lot, enhanced picnic amenities and improved entrances.

Camelot Park will receive  $191,776 in improvements, including a new walking path, benches and bike racks and playground access improvements.

Construction began at Campau, Dickinson and Mary Waters parks earlier this summer.

Revenue generated from the voter-approved parks millage, approved in November 2013, is being used to fund the various park improvements.

The dedicated property millage for parks, pools and playgrounds generates about $4 million annually.

Residents living near each park participated last fall in design workshops hosted by the City of Grand Rapids Parks & Recreation department.

Neighborhood planning teams actively participated in creating and verifying park concept plans and identified priority improvement projects, with the assistance of two local design firms, VIRIDIS Design Group and Progressive AE.
