The majority owner of the Grand Rapids Griffins has purchased an ice arena in the region.

Dan DeVos recently announced he has purchased Edge Ice Arena in Holland, at 4444 Holland Ave.

The arena’s official ownership entity is DV Holland Hockey, which will be included as part of DeVos’ sports operations.

Terms of the deal, which closed on Sept. 30, were not disclosed.

The arena’s former ownership had been approached by several groups looking to convert it to a manufacturing facility, according to Scott Geerlings, managing partner of Edge Ice Arena LLC, which had owned the facility for 18 years.

“I wanted to see the Edge Ice Arena continue as a viable part of sports and recreation in the Holland area,” DeVos said.

DeVos’ DP Fox Sports & Entertainment will manage the arena, as it does Griff’s Icehouse at Belknap Park in Grand Rapids. DeVos is also CEO of the American Hockey League’s Griffins, which practice at Griff’s Icehouse.

The 100,000-square-foot arena was built in 1998 by Geerlings Development.

The arena has two rinks, locker rooms, concession stands, meeting areas and a private observation area.

DeVos said all schedules will be continued, and he will look at how to increase the arena’s overall usage.

Hope College and West Ottawa High School play at the arena. Holland Ice Dogs teams, ranging from Mites to Bantam levels, also play at the arena.

Weekend travel team tournaments at Edge Ice Arena contributed $4.4 million to the Holland area, according to a Holland Convention & Visitors Bureau study in 2004.
