A locally based grocery chain will be the retail anchor for a residential development underway just east of Medical Mile.
Wyoming-based Gordon Food Service said today it will open a “city grocery store” this fall on the ground floor of Diamond Place in Grand Rapids, at 1003 Michigan St. NE.
Diamond Place is a $42-million, four-story joint venture between Grand Rapids-based Third Coast Development and PK Housing & Management of Okemos.
The project will include 165 apartments, a 240-space attached parking ramp and 22,000 square feet of first-floor retail.
The Diamond Place partners chose to incorporate a grocery element to their development because the center city area is currently “a food desert,” they said.
The store will give nearby residents "walkable access to healthy and affordable food, while adding to the vibrancy of the neighborhood,” said Brad Rosely, partner, Third Coast Development.
Tim Grabar, president of Gordon Food Service Stores, said the new location is inspired by neighborhood grocers found in large markets such as Manhattan that make the most of tight spaces.
“Small, intimate settings are where people want to shop today,” Grabar said. “We think we have developed a concept that has everything you’re going to need for a great dinner tonight, in a convenient location with a fun, friendly shopping experience.”
The store will carry seasonal produce and feature a meat and seafood counter, deli, bakery, olive bar and gelato bar.
It will also offer online ordering with in-store pickup for the company’s commercial customers.
Mary Anne Wisinski-Rosely and Todd Leinberger of NAI Wisinski of West Michigan assisted Third Coast Development in brokering the transaction, while NAI’s Tim Platt assisted Gordon Food Service.
