A local grocery chain is opening a neighborhood store next week inside a new development east of Medical Mile.

Wyoming-based Gordon Food Service will open a “city grocery store” at 7 a.m. on Oct. 1 at 1003 Michigan St. NE in Grand Rapids, after hosting a private opening yesterday.

The store is the anchor retail tenant for the $42-million, 2.8-acre Diamond Place mixed-use development being built by Grand Rapids-based Third Coast Development and PK Development Group.

Construction on the project began in January 2017 and is expected to be fully complete this fall.

The new store is inspired by neighborhood grocers found in large cities, such as New York, which are designed to “make the most of tight spaces,” according to Gordon Food Service.

The store will offer fresh seasonal produce, a fresh meat and seafood counter, full-service deli, fresh bakery, olive bar and a craft ice cream bar.
