After two national searches, the Grand Rapids Public Schools board of education selected its new superintendent Monday night.

Leadriane Roby, the assistant superintendent of Richfield Public Schools in Richfield, Minnesota, was selected for the role. If she accepts, the next step is contract negotiations.

Before beginning her current role in June 2014, Roby was principal for Minneapolis Public Schools, returning after seven years previously as a teacher and one year as assistant principal. In between, she spent nine years as principal for Covert Public Schools in Covert, Michigan.

Roby has a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from the University of Minnesota, a Master of Arts degree in education administration from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota; a K-12 educational licensure from Saint Mary’s of Minnesota; and a Ph.D. in K-12 educational leadership, research and technology from Western Michigan University.

Roby was among three finalists for the position.

Roby replaces Teresa Weatherall Neal, who announced her retirement in September 2018 after seven years in the role.
