A local human resources specialist has acquired a company providing children’s sports activities.

Beth Briggs recently acquired Gymco Inc., a Grand Rapids company offering gymnastics instruction, sport development, education and special events for kids. Briggs will assume the roles of president and CEO at Gymco.

Gymco was founded in 1980 by Doreen Bolhuis and offers classes in gymnastics, ninja sports and aerial arts, in addition to operating a movement-based, state-licensed preschool program.

“I have a passion for the mission of Gymco and am delighted to join the Gymco family and continue the legacy that Doreen has built,” Briggs said. “I anticipate future growth as Gymco continues to offer innovative and valuable services for the Grand Rapids community.”

Gymco also offers special events including birthday parties, open gyms and more.

“I have truly enjoyed growing Gymco over the past 40 years,” Bolhuis said. “It has been a pleasure to serve the Grand Rapids community and it is rewarding that we’ve impacted over 80,000 kids to become more physically active and confident. With that said, I am excited to hand the reins over to Beth Briggs and have no doubt that Gymco will continue to thrive under her leadership.”

Bolhuis added she will work closely with Briggs to ensure a smooth transition for the new owner.

Briggs’ professional background is in human resources. She was a previous HR generalist at Lacks Enterprises and more recently has been working as an HR consultant for numerous companies in the development of their human resources departments.

Michael Greengard of Praxis Business Brokers served as broker for the sale. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
