A regional health system named its chief diversity, equity and inclusion officer.

Carlos Cubia joined BHSH System to spearhead its efforts in diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) and sustainability. He will assume this role on June 30.

“With Carlos’ depth of relevant experience and track record of innovation, his leadership will further empower us to transform health for our communities,” said Tina Freese Decker, president and CEO of BHSH System. “I am proud of the important foundational work we have already done and the progress we have made toward building an inclusive, equitable and diverse organization focused on a culture of belonging. But, we recognize that this is a journey, and we have much more work to do. This is why I am so excited for Carlos to join us.”

Prior to joining BHSH, Cubia served as chief DEI officer at Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA) since 2017. In that capacity, he developed and implemented enterprise-wide DEI strategies for 400,000 employees in 17 countries. Before joining WBA, Cubia served in vice president roles at global health care products company Covidien, Aetna and BlueCross Blue Shield.

He currently serves on the boards of the Chicago Urban League, The Chicago Sinfonietta, Hope Chicago and the National Diversity Council.

“Despite the life-altering impacts of COVID-19, systemic racism and social determinants that affect some people more than others, I see real promise,” Cubia said. “We know that if we are to succeed in helping people live healthier, happier lives, we must create a culture in which diversity, equity, inclusion and health equity are at the center. I am honored to help develop and champion the strategies that will bring that about through BHSH System.”

Cubia holds a bachelor’s degree in social science and criminal justice from Michigan State University.
