The faculty members in the Grand Rapids Community College Nursing Department are on the frontlines.

At least six faculty members have volunteered at Spectrum Health and other area health care providers to help fill shifts, and another is sewing and donating face masks. Most of the nursing department’s adjunct professors are employed as nurses at various medical facilities and have picked up additional shifts.

“The people in our nursing program are passionate about what they do,” said Amy Mansfield, dean of GRCC’s School of Workforce Development. “Helping people is in their DNA, and I’m proud to see them coming to the assistance of our partners in a time of need.”

In March, the nursing program and other GRCC departments donated more than 70,000 pieces of medical and personal protection equipment to Spectrum Health, Holland Home and other health care providers.

The campus also is allowing Spectrum employees to use GRCC parking lots.
