Trillium Institute announced hospice and palliative care physician Dr. Jason Beckrow is joining the company’s associated physician faculty.

He will join palliative care physician Dr. John Mulder, Trillium Institute’s co-founder and medical director, to provide education on end-of-life issues, as well as engage in a collaboration with Michigan State University for palliative medicine education.

Beckrow has 20 years of experience as a medical oncologist and palliative medicine specialist. He currently serves as medical director for hospice and palliative medicine for Caring Circle Hospice and Palliative Care/Spectrum Health Lakeland.

“As a country, we spend enormous resources to extend life, but all too often with little regard for the quality of life and patient values and preferences,” Mulder said. “With the addition of Dr. Beckrow, Trillium Institute can now significantly expand the extent and sophistication of resources that will educate professionals, helping to align medical resources in assisting families to achieve an optimal balance between the quantity and quality of life.”

Beckrow also will assist Mulder in crafting a broader strategy for community and medical education in areas of disease management, advance care planning and palliative care. Beckrow will continue to serve as medical director for Caring Circle, a position he held since 2009.

Founded in Grand Rapids in 2014, Trillium Institute, an affiliate of Holland Home, has the mission of helping medical professionals, families and terminally ill patients in Michigan understand person-centered care and helps them navigate options for pursuing options consistent with patients’ wishes.

For the medical community, the institute aims to serve as a resource to train practicing physicians, medical students, residents, nurses, physician assistants and social workers in the art of clear communication with patients and their families, as well as pain and complex symptom management. Trillium also supports advanced medical training for physicians who aspire to become board-certified palliative care physicians.
