A Michigan health plan provider appointed three new leaders and filled a new senior role in health plan operations.

Priority Health president Praveen Thadani led a nationwide candidate search to fill positions for the growing senior leadership team. The health plan provider named Nick Gates senior vice president of finance, Joyce Chan Russell senior vice president of government markets, Karena Weikel senior vice president of advanced analytics and chief actuary and Mike Jasperson senior vice president of provider network and health plan operations.

“We are pleased to have exceptionally talented leaders for these important positions,” Thadani said. “Our senior leadership team is focused on transforming the industry to make care and coverage better for everyone. I am energized as we head into 2022, and I am incredibly grateful for our more than 2,250 team members.”

Gates has held a variety of positions at Priority Health since 2004 and will be responsible for all financial strategy and long-range planning, investments, finance operations, accounts and auditor relationships for the organization. Gates has provided governance support to Priority Health’s finance and audit committee, led the valuation and due diligence in the acquisition of Total Health Care and ensured the initial and continued realization of integration benefits.

Russell oversees the individual, Medicare Advantage and Medicaid markets for the organization and has focused on the health of vulnerable populations since 2004, both on the payer side of the business and care delivery. She is responsible for driving growth, managing profit and loss, partnering with industry and government stakeholders, and delivering on quality and operational goals in alignment with the organization’s effort to transform health care.

Weikel brings more than 20 years of health care experience to her new position, 15 of which were spent in leadership roles. She has focused on transforming provider arrangements from fee-for-service toward value-based care trend management, as well as underwriting, risk adjustment, actuarial and advanced analytics. As senior vice president of advanced analytics, she leads teams who blend math, statistics, economics, technology and business knowledge to develop analytics designed to improve revenue and reduce expenses to ensure affordability of Priority’s products.

Jasperson will oversee provider network development, provider operations and performance, value-based arrangements, customer service, claims, enrollment and other key operations focusing on member, provider and overall experience. Jasperson has served as senior vice president of provider networking since March 2020 and held previous roles with the organization since 2016.
