A local health system and retailer have partnered to offer breast cancer screenings at convenient locations throughout West Michigan.

Spectrum Health’s Betty Ford Breast Care Services will operate a new mobile mammography unit, sponsored by Meijer, which will offer screenings and mammography services at Meijer stores and locations in the region. The 45-foot bus is Spectrum’s second mobile unit, and houses state-of-the-art digital technology to bring the same experience and care of a standalone location to patients receiving screenings.

“We are very pleased that this new mobile unit, made possible through the generosity of Meijer, will bring mammography into communities where such services are not readily available,” said Judy Smith, chief of Spectrum Health Cancer Center. “We want our patients — women and men — to have convenient access to screenings that could potentially be life-saving.”

The bus was showcased at an open house on May 20 at the Alpine Meijer, 2425 Alpine Ave. NW, where it will return from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Thursday, May 25, to conduct screenings.

Both mobile units offer 3-D mammography and traditional digital screening, in line with the Betty Ford Breast Care Services’ 14 standalone locations. Patients are seen at the mobile units from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with walk-in services available depending on scheduling. Insurance is accepted on mobile units, but free mammograms are provided for under or uninsured patients who qualify.

The unit moves throughout the community to serve patients who may not have access to mammograms. In addition to Meijer retail locations, mobile unit visits are available at physician offices and local organizations, offering screenings to employees.

“Meijer is committed to expanding convenient access to breast screenings,” Meijer Health and Wellness Director Jacquelyn DeBruler said. “This partnership gives us an opportunity to meet customers where they are.”

Of the 95,000 breast imaging studies and diagnostic services provided annually, about 3,000 are provided through the mobile unit. Patients can schedule a mammogram ahead of time at or by calling (877) 495-2626.
