A health system has expanded into a new lakeshore market.
Mercy Health Physician Partners, part of Mercy Health, has opened its first primary care practice in Ludington, at 300 S. Rath Ave.
The practice, known as Mercy Health Physician Partners Sable Point Family Care, currently has two health care providers: Dr. John Cooney, D.O. and Brent Johnson, PA-C.
As a primary care practice, Sable Point will serve Ludington and the surrounding communities’ medical needs, including routine office visits, preventative care, chronic disease management and sick or urgent needs.
Cooney, a family medicine specialist at Sable Point Family Care, said the practice is a new medical home for the community, and the office is a place where patients can come for accessible and individually focused care.
“The practice is basically providing all aspects of primary care. We take care of the newborns on up to the geriatric population,” Cooney said.
With existing family physicians in the area with full or nearly full patient capacity, Cooney said there was a need for Sable Point Family Care practice to open in Ludington.
“There definitely has been a shortage of primary care access in the area,” Cooney said. “Now with more patients getting insurance coverage there has been difficulty for those patients to get into practices, just from a volume standpoint.”
Cooney began seeing patients earlier this summer when he started at the Sable Point Family Care practice in the middle of June, while physician assistant Brent Johnson began working at the office a month before Cooney.
Prior to moving into the Ludington location, both Cooney and Johnson practiced in Hart and established some of the Sable Point Family Practice patient base while at the previous office due to proximity.
Mercy Health anticipates adding another provider by the fall to the first Mercy Health Physician Partners primary care practice in Ludington.
The health system has also expanded neurosurgical services into the area with Dr. Rick Edgar holding monthly clinics for referred patients out of the Sable Point Family Care facility. Edgar, a neurosurgeon at Shoreline Neurosurgical Consulting and affiliated with Mercy Health in Muskegon, will offer consulting visits for patients needing advanced treatment options related to the brain and spine.
Mercy Health Physician Partners West Shore Cardiology also holds a cardiology clinic twice a month through its Internal Medical Associates PC facility in Ludington. The cardiologists have provided inpatient and outpatient consultations to the Ludington community since 1981 and will now hold a new cardiac device clinic once a month. The new clinic is designed for follow-ups and re-programming for patients with defibrillators and pacemakers.
