A health care system is building out an 82,000-square-foot outpatient facility east of Grand Rapids to meet demand by patients and physicians in the area.

Metro Health’s facility in Grand Rapids Charter Township will be called Metro Health Park East, at Cascade Road SE and I-96.
The facility’s outpatient surgery center will begin seeing patients in January, and the facility will ultimately offer expanded outpatient services, including urgent care, a wound clinic, lab and imaging and some physician offices.
Ellen Bristol, a spokesperson for Metro Health Hospital, said just east of Metro Health Park East, on Cascade Road SE, is Metro Health Cascade, one of the system’s neighborhood outpatient centers.
Bristol said Metro Health Cascade and its other outpatient centers have been “very successful,” but part of the reason to open Metro Health Park East is demand by patients and physicians, who aren’t near the Metro Health Hospital complex southwest of Grand Rapids in Wyoming.
“This facility will provide good convenience to those people,” Bristol said.
Metro Health has about a dozen outpatient centers — from Cedar Springs south to Wayland and from Hudsonville east to Lowell — which include primary care offices, plus other basic outpatient services, such as physical therapy, lab and some imaging.
Mary Marks, director of special projects at Metro Health, said the hospital’s total investment in the facility isn’t known yet, as the full range of services are still in planning.
Built for health care
The building, which was built on spec in late 2007 and has never been occupied, has been known up to now as the Harley Medical Park, the former site of the Harley Hotel, which was located where East Paris Avenue SE terminates at Cascade Road SE, just west of the expressway.
Metro Health began leasing the property in March from Cascade East Paris Properties.
Bill Bowling, a spokesperson for the owners, said the building was originally designed with another local hospital system in mind as the potential tenant.
The basic building was completed at the end of 2007, “and then, of course, the world blew up” with the recession, Bowling said.
The building has been kept heated since then, he said, and is “like a brand new building.”
Bowling said the owners had “many opportunities” to partition the building for leasing to multiple tenants, “but it was built to service a large medical tenant, and we just waited until one came along.”
Bowling said the commercial real estate market serving the health care industry “is torch flame hot” right now.
