An executive with more than 20 years of experience in the health care industry is the new CEO at a health care system in the region.

New leader at Borgess

The Michigan Health Ministries of Ascension Health, which includes five health systems across the state affiliated with Ascension Health, said this month that it has named Kathy Young the CEO and president of Borgess Health in Kalamazoo.

Young will assume leadership responsibilities in early 2015 and succeed former CEO Paul Spaude, who retired last month after nine years of service. Spaude announced his pending retirement, to spend more time with his family, during the summer.

Most recently, Young served as president at St. Joseph Hospital in Kokomo, Ind. since 2008. St. Joseph Hospital is a member of St. Vincent Health, which is also associated with Ascension Health.

James Devlin, board chair at Borgess Health, said Young understands the new health care market demands and has a clear vision to lead the health system to success.

“Kathy’s leadership will continue to enhance our culture of safety and quality through physician and associate engagement,” Devlin said.

Patricia Maryland, president of health care operations and COO at Ascension Health, said as Young begins her new role, she exemplifies the organization’s efforts to develop and nurture talented leaders to take on greater responsibilities across the integrated national health ministry.

“Kathy has a deep commitment to Ascension’s mission of serving all persons, with special attention to those who are poor and vulnerable,” Maryland said.

Health care background

Young has worked in acute care hospital and health system leadership roles and has experience leading business processes: LEAN management, operations management, financial leadership, cultural leadership, physician relationship development, program development and leadership coaching.

With a clinical background as a respiratory therapist and registered with the National Board of Respiratory Care, Young attended Marian College to earn an associate’s degree in respiratory therapy sciences and a bachelor’s degree in allied health.

Young went on to graduate from the University of St. Francis with a master’s degree in health services administration.

She’s also participating in the Ascension Leadership Academy.

Young is a fellow in the American College of Health Care Executives, member of Executive Women in Healthcare and member of the Indiana Rural Health Association.
