An event emphasizing prevention and management of heart failure will take place Tuesday in Grand Rapids.

Mercy Health is hosting its first Heart 2 Heart event on Feb. 25, which will focus on educating the community on heart failure and the risks associated with the condition. The first session will take place from 2-4 p.m. at Browning Claytor Health Center, 1246 Madison Ave. SE in Grand Rapids. The second session is offered from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Lacks Cancer Center, 250 Cherry St. SE in Grand Rapids.

Both sessions will have a seminar emphasizing the causes and risks of heart failure, as well as treatment options. Kristy Todd, nurse practitioner at Mercy Health, works with the heart failure program and said the seminars will provide an overview as well as a risk assessment presentation.

“Really it is to help educate the community on heart failure,” said Todd. “The hope is that people who have heart failure will show up.”

In addition to the seminar, sous chef Bryan Nader will present and prepare heart healthy food options. He will be providing alternatives to common seasonings that should be avoided with those at risk for heart failure, such as salt.

Heart failure affects roughly 6 million individuals in the United States, which can result from causes such as coronary heart disease, high blood pressure or diabetes. Other at risk factors include: high cholesterol, obesity and suffering a heart attack.

“Many people can’t afford it,” said Todd in reference to treating or managing heart failure. “Or don’t make it a priority.”

Although Mercy Health has offered other outreach programs for the community, this is the first event focused on heart failure, according to Todd. The hope is to offer the event again in the future, after evaluating the success of the event and where the biggest need is in the community.
