The announcement that Colliers International of West Michigan made in early March has been made official.

The world’s second largest clothing retailer is coming to Grand Rapids.

H&M will open its first store in West Michigan at Woodland Mall this fall, according to the firm.

Setting up shop at Woodland Mall is part of the company’s plan to expand throughout the Midwest.

"Fast fashion"

The Sweden-based retailer will lease 19,000 square feet of space in the region’s largest shopping center for its men’s, women’s and children’s “fast-fashion” clothing lines and accessories, including maternity wear and plus sizes.

H&M entered the U.S. market 13 years ago when it debuted on New York’s Fifth Avenue. The retailer has 269 U.S. locations.

Swedish roots

H&M opened its first store in Vasteras, Sweden, in 1947.

The company has retail outlets in 43 countries and employs about 94,000 workers. Its clothing lines are manufactured at approximately 800 factories worldwide.

H&M had a total of 2,881 stores at the end of April, up from 2,549 the previous April.

H&M reported sales revenue of 127 billion in 2010.

Only Inditex of Spain is seen as being larger globally than H&M.

GAP Inc. is ranked third worldwide.
