A local maker of home care products is using a crowdfunding platform to launch a new portable bathing system for dogs.

Walker-based Bissell said this week it launched the campaign for its BarkBath Portable Dog Bath System on Indiegogo on March 1 and hopes to raise $50,000 from backers over the next two months.

The BarkBath, which promises to take the mess out of dog washing, is being made available for $99 to early backers exclusively through Indiegogo.

In its first day and a half, the BarkBath has garnered $18,000 from backers.

The product is in production, and Bissell plans to begin shipments in May.

Bissell said beginning in May, the BarkBath will become available through select retailers.

Chuck Martin, GM of innovation at Bissell, said Indiegogo provides an ideal platform for launching a product like BarkBath, which he said is “so different than anything that has come out of Bissell.”

“It's a great marketing tool, as early adopters search crowdfunding platforms to find the newest innovations,” Martin said. “Plus, it is a great way to gather feedback and insights in the production process directly from backers who are passionate about what you're creating.”

Bissell said the BarkBath allows pet owners to bathe their dogs “practically anywhere,” because it uses specially designed nozzles that get beneath the fur and down to the skin, allowing water and shampoo to wash the skin clean, while a soft suction pulls dirt and water away into a separate dirty water tank.

Martin said bath time can be a huge “pain point” for both the pet and the pet parent, so BarkBath helps make pet bath time “faster, easier and less messy.”

The BarkBath also uses less water overall. Bissell said the system uses 48 ounces of water to clean dogs weighing 80-plus pounds, whereas traditional tub washing can use as much as 19 gallons of water.

The BarkBath was developed by a team of Bissell employees within the company’s incubator program, Bissell Business Ventures, which was created to focus on new business innovations.
