The owners of HopCat, the world renowned beer bar in downtown Grand Rapids, have broken ground on a new location in East Lansing.
The Michigan Hop Alliance supplied the bar with 12 rhizomes to be planted in hop barrels — and grow during the construction, at the corner of Grove and Albert streets.
The hops are meant to be a reminder of the growing Michigan craft beer industry and the sustainable efforts by the industry.
East Lansing Mayor Diane Goddeeris helped HopCat mark the day and planted hop rhizomes.
HopCat has been named one of the world's best beer bars by BeerAdvocate magazine, RateBeer.com and Craftbeer.com.

This location will have 100 taps, and BarFly Ventures — the umbrella company that owns HopCat, Grand Rapids Brewing Co., McFaddens and Stella's Lounge — expects to create more than 75 jobs when it opens later this summer.

BarFly owner Mark Sellers is a Michigan State University alum and also has plans to open a Lansing Brewing Co. in downtown Lansing near Cooley Law School Stadium, where the Single-A Lansing Lugnuts play baseball.
