A locally based chain of beer bars is changing the name of its acclaimed fries after determining the name isn’t “compatible” with its “vision of creating an inclusive company.”
HopCat, part of Grand Rapids-based BarFly Ventures, announced yesterday its plans to change the name of its Crack Fries.
“We chose the name more than 11 years ago as a reference to the addictive quality of the fries and their cracked-pepper seasoning, without consideration for those the drug negatively affected,” says Mark Gray, CEO of Barfly Ventures, in a post on HopCat’s website.
“We were wrong. The crack epidemic and the lasting impact on those it affects is not funny and never was.”
Gray says transitioning to “a new name” will take some time.
A company-wide menu re-print is scheduled for mid-January. HopCat will also “need time” to update other materials, including online menus, promotions and training documents.
“We want to thank our guests, employees and community members who have helped us come to this realization and apologize for the pain the name brought to others,” Gray says.
The original recipe for HopCat’s Crack Fries won’t change.
The fries are beer-battered with HopCat’s signature cracked black pepper seasoning.
Food Network magazine has named Crack Fries one of “America's 10 Best French Fries.”
There are several other variants of the fries: Loaded Crack Fries, topped with cherry smoked bacon, red onion, pickled jalapeño and cheese sauce; Sloppy Crack Fries, topped with HopCat’s Sloppy Joseph, cheese sauce and scallions; and Vladimir Poutine, topped with potato and cheese pierogi, cheddar cheese curds, caramelized onions, hickory smoked bacon and spicy sausage gravy.
