A new chief medical officer was promoted at a hospital in the region.

Mercy Health Muskegon named Dr. Justin Grill to the position. He succeeds Dr. F. Remington Sprague, who will retire Feb. 15.

Grill is being promoted from his role as vice chief of medicine for Mercy Health Muskegon.

Grill has served in various capacities for Mercy Health since 2008, including work in the urgent care centers, as attending physician for Emergency Health Partners and as managing partner for Lake Michigan Emergency Specialists, where he led the merger of two longstanding medicine groups into a singular combined independent practice.

As director of medical education for Mercy Health Muskegon, Grill has overseen the growth of the residency program from three programs to five, including the addition of two fellowships.

He also led the Mercy Health Graduate Medical Education programs accreditation transition from the American Osteopathic Association to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

“Dr. Grill has played an integral role at Mercy Health with a proven track record of success and growth,” said Gary Allore, president of Mercy Health Muskegon. “We are proud to welcome him into the role of chief medical officer.”

Grill is a graduate of Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Grill is a member of the American Association for Physician Leadership, the Michigan State Medical Society, the Association for Hospital Medical Education and the American Osteopathic Association and more.

He serves on the Medical Executive Committee for Mercy Health Muskegon and is an adjunct professor for the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine.
