A general manager has been named for a downtown hotel scheduled to open in 2019.
Ryan Schmied will take the role for AC Hotel Grand Rapids Downtown, opening this May, at 50 Monroe Ave. NW, according to AHC+Hospitality this month.
Schmied will oversee day-to-day operations, specialty programming and beverage and food operations of the 130-room “lifestyle” hotel.
Most recently, he was beverage director at Miami-based Whisk Gourmet Food & Catering, where he was responsible for annual beverage sales over $1 million.
Starting as a doorman after high school, Schmied held various operational roles at the JW Marriott Hotel Miami, before transitioning to operations manager on the opening team at Hotel Beaux Arts Miami.
He has also held roles in Florida dealing with wine and beverages for Old Vines Wine and Spirits, Wolfe’s Wine Shoppe and Whole Foods Market.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in hospitality from Florida International University.
“As a well-traveled level-two sommelier with long-standing roots in the hospitality industry, extensive knowledge of European culture, wine and spirits, Schmied is the ideal candidate to establish the AC Hotel brand in an emerging market,” said Rick Winn, president, AHC+Hospitality.
Schmied said he plans to position the hotel as a “cultural hub, rich with experiences and events unique to the destination.”
“From hosting local musicians at wine and beer tastings to ping-pong tournaments, this exclusive, curated programming calendar will solidify the hotel as the ultimate pre- and post-event destination for guests and locals,” Schmied said.

The hotel will feature “minimalist design details” and the building’s original brick façade, AHC said.
The property will offer Spanish tapas-style dining and a “beverage program.”
The company did not release additional details.
