A new $12-million hotel has opened in the market.

Tru by Hilton Grand Rapids Airport opened last week in Kentwood, at 4570 28th St. SE, about three miles from Gerald R. Ford International Airport.

Owned and managed by Auburn Hills-based Midwest Lodging Group, the 42,000-square-foot, 98-room hotel is meant for cross-generational travelers looking for a “new, affordable hotel experience,” according to the brand.

Midwest Lodging Group said it wanted to build a location for the new Hilton brand in the “up-and-coming area.”

The four-story hotel includes a 2,880-square-foot lobby with areas for guests to work and lounge, along with a 24/7 market for snacks and drinks.

There’s also a fitness center that includes barre, TRX bands, free weights, cardio and flexibility gear.

The hotel uses technology through mobile check-in, digital keys, Wi-Fi, remote printing, a social media wall and lobby tablets.

Midwest Lodging Group handled the architecture, construction and interior design for the project.

The hotel is employing 17 people across management, guest services, housekeeping and breakfast service.

The company is hiring more employees for housekeeping, the front desk and breakfast.

Matthew Werner is the hotel's manager, moving from an assistant manager position at a Hampton Inn in Grand Rapids.

Tess Berlin is the director of sales, moving from a group sales manager position for Wyndham Hotels in Grand Rapids.
