A workforce development agency will conduct phone interviews this week as it seeks to help more than 30 West Michigan employers fill over 100 positions.

West Michigan Works! will host a remote job fair May 20-21 to connect employers and candidates in Allegan, Barry, Kent, Montcalm, Muskegon and Ottawa counties.

During the week of May 11, job seekers can register for 15-minute phone interviews with local employers to discuss their skills and qualifications and learn more about their open positions.

Participating employers represent the construction, banking and health care industries. Some of West Michigan’s largest employers, including Spectrum Health, Perrigo and Herman Miller, are registered.

Available positions range from entry-level to highly skilled and temporary to permanent employment.

“Even as we’ve seen a rise in unemployment, many employers are still hiring,” said Amy Lebednick, business solutions director for West Michigan Works! “The health care, retail and grocery, medical device production and supply, food processing and manufacturing industries have a high demand for their services and products.”

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics April jobs report, 20.5 million Americans were unemployed last month. April’s unemployment rate was 14.3% nationally, an increase of 4.4% from March. This is the largest month-over-month increase since the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics began tracking the unemployment rate in January 1948.

Those who are interested can view the list of employers participating in the job fair and register for phone interviews at westmiworks.org/virtual-job-fair.
