An ice cream maker in the region has released the first flavor in its small-batch “artisan” collection.

Holland-based Hudsonville Ice Cream said this week it is rolling out Bowerman’s Blueberry Donut under its Michigan Artisan Collection.

The flavor pairs vanilla ice cream with a blueberry swirl and chunks of blueberry doughnut, with both key ingredients from Bowerman Blueberries in Holland.

“Bowerman’s Blueberry Donut was an immediate favorite in our testing process,” said Morgan Craig, flavor development scientist, Hudsonville Ice Cream.

“Not only did the blueberry doughnut pieces pop when mixed with our ice cream, but we’re tapping into a flavor strongly associated with Michigan.”

Michigan is one of the nation’s leading blueberry producers, with 100-million pounds of blueberries grown each year, according to Hudsonville Ice Cream.

The Michigan Artisan Collection is a small-batch collection of flavors “representative of the best parts of Michigan,” with ingredients sourced from local artisans and flavors suggested by fans.

The collection will include two other flavors to be announced this year.
