The owners of a local manufacturer of industrial scales have sold the business to a multinational supplier of weighing instruments.
David Martin and Pam Meier, third-generation owners of Wyoming-based D.C. Martin & Son Scales, recently sold their company to Columbus, Ohio-based Mettler-Toledo International (NYSE: MTD), according to their mergers and acquisition advisory firm, Grand Rapids-based Calder Capital, on Feb. 18.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Martin and Meier have worked in the business founded by their grandfather, Dave C. Martin, a first-generation immigrant from Scotland who achieved commercial success with a sixth-grade education, since 1984.
Under their ownership, D.C. Martin began expanding sales outside of West Michigan, becoming a supplier to large companies such as Amazon, Honeywell and Dematic.
When Meier decided to exit the business, she and Martin began to look for a successor that would allow her to exit and Martin to continue with the company longer term.
They approached Calder in 2018 to identify a buyer, and they said they found a good fit in Mettler-Toledo.
“While it was a difficult decision to sell our family business, which was now on the third generation, it was the right decision. … We received multiple offers and knew ultimately that we choose the best buyer in Mettler-Toledo,” Martin said.
