Kent County opens up bidding on riverfront property


Kent County is now accepting offers for some prime riverfront property it owns — along Monroe Avenue NW between Michigan and Trowbridge streets.

The county has three adjacent parcels that total 1.28 acres on the east bank of the Grand River, a few blocks north of the DeVos Place convention center.

The county bought the vacant sites in 2004 for $2.4 million and is testing the waters, so to speak, to see if any developers might be interested in acquiring the property.

The county is also taking offers for a 90 space parking lot it owns across Monroe Avenue from the parcels. The lot can be bid separately.

County Assistant Administrator Mary Swanson said interested parties should submit their offers by June 14.

The county recently created a subcommittee consisting of four commissioners who will review all offers that are received.

More information on the property, including a baseline environmental assessment, is available online via the county's Purchasing Department.

The idea to possibly sell the property surfaced last fall when an unidentified individual asked the county if it was interested in selling the parcels.

County officials have told the Business Journal that the person who made the inquiry was not affiliated with Michigan State University, which recently purchased land in the area, or the Amway Corp., which owns the former Olds Manor building at Michigan and Monroe.
