Law firm elects leadership

A local law firm has made some changes to its leadership.

Grand Rapids-based Wheeler Upham said last month it selected shareholder Glenn Smith as the firm’s new president.

He will succeed Gary Maximiuk, who will continue his insurance and ligation defense practice at the firm.

Smith’s duties as president will include assisting with the firm's operations.

He will manage the firm’s attorneys and overlook personnel and financial matters. 

Wheeler Upham also said shareholder Michael TerBeek was elected as the chair, secretary and treasurer of the firm’s board.

The board of directors is made up of three shareholders: Smith, TerBeek and James Shade.

The board is elected annually by the firm’s shareholders.

Smith has been practicing at Wheeler Upham since 2002.

Smith specializes in employment law, civil litigation, business and corporate law, contracts, construction law, federal government contracts, postal law and torts.

He is a member of the State Bar of Michigan and Grand Rapids Bar Association. 

He holds a B.A. from the University of Michigan and earned a J.D. from the University of Michigan in 1989.

Michael TerBeek

TerBeek joined Wheeler Upham in 2011.

TerBeek's practice focuses on business formation, purchase and sale transactions, contract formation, employee issues, commercial litigation, leases and real estate purchases.

He is active in the Grand Rapids chapter of the Calvin College Alumni Association. He's on the steering committee for the Calvin Alumni Law Profession of Michigan and serves as chairman of the Calvin Spring Classic 5k race committee. He is also president of the board of AnchorPoint Christian School in Wyoming.

He's also an active member of the Calvin Christian Reformed Church, having served as treasurer, chair of deacons and a member of the executive committee, as well as a Sunday school teacher. 

He holds a B.A. from Calvin College and earned a J.D., cum laude, from the University of Minnesota in 2005.
