A Detroit-based law firm is planning to open its first Grand Rapids office.
Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn, a business law firm that serves clients around the world, said today it is opening its seventh office and first in the city.
The firm is looking for temporary office space and plans to open a permanent home some time in 2017.
Tracy Larsen has been tapped to run the firm’s Grand Rapids office. He will serve as managing partner and co-chair of the mergers and acquisitions practice in the firm’s corporate department.
Honigman will offer all of its services available on a national level at the Grand Rapids location.
David Foltyn, chairman of the board and CEO of Honigman, said the firm decided to enter the Grand Rapids market as part of its talent acquisition strategy of “bringing young lawyers into the fold.”
“We enter markets because we’re looking for talent,” he said. “We have a very growing national and global practice, and we’ve talked about Grand Rapids for quite some time. It has some very talented lawyers. But we said we’re not going to open the Grand Rapids firm unless Tracy Larsen opens, manages and grows it for us.”
Larsen represents clients in M&A, joint ventures, takeover defense, corporate finance transactions and restructurings, corporate governance and federal securities law issues.
Foltyn said Larsen was selected in part for his M&A experience, as the firm looks to expand that aspect of its business.
“Tracy’s addition to our firm will deepen our already robust M&A practice through working on complex transactions,” he said.
Larsen said he’s “excited” to for "the opportunity" to join Honigman’s M&A practice and "leverage the firm’s vast resources and capabilities" to serve clients in "some of the most complex and sophisticated middle-market deals in both Michigan and the U.S."
Larsen is chairperson emeritus of the Business Law Section of the Michigan State Bar.
He holds a B.A. in economics, summa cum laude, from Hope College and a J.D., magna cum laude, from the Indiana University School of Law.
