A local law office has welcomed a new attorney to its team.
Barnes & Thornburg said this month it hired Suzanne Sutherland as an associate attorney at its Grand Rapids office.
Sutherland is a member of the firm’s real estate department.
She focuses on development and construction matters, acquisition, leasing, sales and financing. She also assists clients on issues such as environmental compliance and enforcement.
Most recently, Sutherland was an associate attorney at Hilger Hammond in Grand Rapids.
Sutherland lectures and writes on construction law topics, including Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration compliance, the Michigan Construction Lien Act, the Builders Trust Fund Act, environmental issues and dispute resolution relating to construction, commercial and real estate matters.
She is a member of the Construction Law Forum of the American Bar Association and the Grand Rapids Bar Association.
Sutherland is involved with the Grand Rapids Community Foundation and the U.S. Green Building Council. She also volunteers with the Grand Rapids Public Schools, serving on the advisory council of the Grand Rapids Academy of Design and Construction and as a mentor to high school students.
She holds a B.B.A. from Grand Valley State University and a J.D. from Wayne State University Law School, which she earned in 2014.
