Local attorney to head Grand Rapids Symphony board

A partner at Varnum LLP was named chair of a local musical organization.

The Grand Rapids Symphony announced Luis Avila as chair of its board of directors. He has been serving on the board for three years.

The orchestra has more than 400 performances per year, some of which benefits students, senior citizens and people with disabilities through education and community service programs.

Avila is a labor and employment attorney at Varnum. He has experience in grievances, arbitrations, collective bargaining negotiations, union drives and matters in front of the National Labor Relations Board and the Michigan Employment Relations Commission.

He counsels employers on workplace matters and represents clients under the various state and federal statutes that govern the employment relationship.

Avila currently serves as co-chair of Varnum’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

In addition to his new title, he is serving on the boards of Grand Rapids Downtown Development Authority, the Grand Rapids Art Museum and the West Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
