Local companies see domino effect from wellness services

Peaches McCahill, owner and president of The McCahill Group — a corporate wellness company based in East Grand Rapids — said throughout the 30 years her organization has been operating, she has seen an increase in the number of people seeking its services.

According to Statista, a market research company, 184 million visits were made to U.S. spa facilities in 2016, which is a 5 million increase from 2015.

“Now, wellness is a big focus for the last number of years because what is happening is insurance cost has accelerated and so much of those claims are related to controlling of risk factors, whether that is Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol,” McCahill said. “Those are the concerns, so we go into organizations and look for those things.”

Andy Bix, vice president of health and wellness at The McCahill Group, said companies that offer wellness services have seen a domino effect.

“Companies are starting to see the importance of making their employees happier, healthier and more productive, which helps to reduce tension, it helps with recruiting and it helps with quality of work,” he said. “Those things, at the end of the day, make a better work environment, and it is a win-win situation for the employee and the employer.”

The McCahill Group strives to go above and beyond your average wellness and fitness organization.

Instead of going to the company, it takes its services to you. The McCahill Group works with over 12 companies in West Michigan, including Amway, Goodwill and Progressive, to create a positive energy in the workplace.

McCahill said her team assists companies on-site by doing cultural assessments to see what is going on in the organization, so it can determine the readiness of individuals to get a healthier employee base.

Afterward, it conducts interviews to see what a comprehensive wellness program would look like.

“So, it is not just about diet and exercise,” McCahill said. “The whole compass of wellness is everything, like your financial fitness, your well-being and your mental attitude toward life.

“We look at the totality of an individual and see what programs will make those behavior changes. So, I like to say that we are a behavior change agency.”

Depending on the type of program that is recommended for a company, The McCahill Group can provide wellness management programs, customized wellness programs, fitness center management and design, weight loss programs, health coaching, group fitness, nutritional consultation, personal training and general education about wellness and fitness.

The McCahill Group also offers services to the public at its own M Power Wellness Studio.

“We do personal training, we do massage therapy, we do health coaching and we are also bringing in new and innovative ways to reach people, whether it is through (a spa) or using essential oils,” said Andy Bix, vice president of health and wellness at The McCahill Group. “It is a public place that you can go, especially if you don't have a corporation that provides wellness services.”
